Parker - Cake Smash

This was a surreal photo shoot, because it was MY baby that was turning ONE! It's still hard to believe and the reality of it hits me again and again everytime someone asks me how old he is and I say, "13 months." Man. That first year really does fly by. If I had $10 for everyone who has said that to me since he was born, I could take a nice vacation! I am so grateful to have my photography for a lot of reasons, but definitely so that I can capture our Parker before he's all grown up! It's my way of keeping him in that little box that all mommies want to put their kids in to keep them from growing up.

This was a FUN photo shoot. What isn't fun about smashing a cake and eating it to?! For the setup, I created a handmade burlap banner (which you can find HERE in my Etsy shop PhotograMomProps), blew up some bright colored balloons and baked and iced a cake all by myself! I gathered some of Parker's most loved stuffies and got them all dressed for the party. We couldn't celebrate without Dumbo, Pooh, Spot and Gerald the Giraffe!

Parker knew just what to do with the cake. He had two birthday parties so we could celebrate with our family in PA and in VA. Once we gave him permission, he got to work!

Clap your hands for cake! He was loving it!

On all of his cakes, he had these red icing dots and he was fascinated by them. All that cake in front of him to grab and he wanted to pick off the dots.

I wanted to make sure that I got close up shots of all the details, especially the messiness! Parker did not dissapoint. He was digging in the icing, mashing it all over his face, squishing it his hands AND licking his fingers! Smart kid! Don't let any of that sugary goodness go to waste.

Never underestimate the power of food coloring. I knew the blue icing would be the perfect "pop" of color for my photos, but I did not consider the logistics of cleaning up a blue baby when all was said and done. We had quite the little Smurf on our hands by the time Parker had his fill of "smashing."

I think someone was having fun...

Finally got one of the candid smiles that I live for. I LOVE candid photographs and would be perfectly happy snapping pictures all day long of people who are just enjoying life and don't even know that I'm there.

The aftermath. Amazing what a curious 1 yr old can do to a cake. It never saw it coming...

Evidence that a cake smashing one year old was here. Hope you enjoyed the fun!

The End.
